those are the calls we are called to create; not sure they already exist ...

are you a mission developer / transformation leader? Our synod is trying to have more able spirited pastors come. It's Southwestern Washington. We have openings; two of them are to be part of a three parish model with the ideas of sharing ministries…

I did a wedding once, not in prison, on Sunday morning right after the sermon, which given it was Earth day had more to do with Rev. 5:11-14 and care for creation. Afterwards the church threw a potluck for the couple. It was by far the easiest and m…

can you give examples of questions you ask. In the past I have door knocked for community events at the church ,ie, youth art show, flu shots, etc., but not cold call conversations.

fascinating that this gathering parallels the assembly. i don't mean that in any way that is snarky. it would be interesting for someone to do a comparison of both at some point

Lars some of what you bring up is the next chapter of the prison congregation. Each week I bring another 10 people from a church in my synod to worship. But soon, men from Living Stones will release and will the churches who have come to worship wel…

Profile Information

Hometown:
Shelton, Washington
About Me:
I lead a church called the Living Stones Prison Congregation at the prison in Shelton, WA. As part the ministry, I visit lots of other churches and stir people to get involved in prison ministry. We are also building a re-entry program composed of church teams who partner with exiting incarcerated people. When not actively engaged with the above I spend time with my wife and two sons. When not actively involved with the above, I do art work and garden
Who am I? (Many ways to answer this -- be as creative as you want, or not.)
I am a book worm, a gardener, an artist, a father, a husband, but if I could be a comic book character, I would be DREAM, one of the eternals from the Sandman series written by Neil Gaiman, put out by DC Comics
How did I get into "emerging ministry"?
I signed up on the web site. So what's emerging ministry?
Say a little bit about the community you share life with...
The 'formal' congregation is all incarcerated men. Very broken, very on fire for God.
Then there is the prison staff. They are not the enemy, and if they are, I am included in that mix for while I am not official staff, I am one of the definite "keepers".
Then there are the church volunteers members of churches, who are curious and/or commited for prison ministry.
What are the most pressing questions (both theological and practical) you and your community have?
Theological: For our community the pressing is "is grace actually grace."
Practical:
Right now we don't have a pressing practical concern, or perhaps pressing is relative. We will always be on the look out to help a church anywhere do prison ministry, re-entry ministry, and even ministry with the familiies of the incarcerated. It is pretty pressing in and of itself.

The Parable of the Salmon Berry

Last week I met with Sr. Mary. She is not my spiritual director though she is a spiritual director. She is also not my supervisor but I meet once a month with her for supervision, some directed talk about ministry in prison and with the incarcerated, both to keep my center/focus and to keep me from eating the carpet.

I do my usual dump out of everything from the last month, the good and bad, practical concerns and theological challenges. With 15 minutes left, she asked me to give one word or ph… Continue
