I think an interesting difference between 'emergent' and 'emerging'. Wood Lake books, publishing arm of the United Church of Canada has published a few books in the vein 'of emerging christianity' asking how we do faith in light of theories of 'emer…

the difference as i see it is the differece between being "emergant" and "emerging" - the idea of being "emergent" means you have arrived, you are there - no other process needs to take place. in that, those who claim to be "emergent" repeat the wor…

Who am I? (Many ways to answer this -- be as creative as you want, or not.)
A child of God, claimed in the waters of baptism
How did I get into "emerging ministry"?
I'm not sure. I was telling a fellow youth minister about my beliefs and my hopes for the church - and he said, "it sounds like you're an emergent". To which I replied, "what is an emergent?" So, I'm trying to find out (A) what an emergent is, and (B) if I am one.
Say a little bit about the community you share life with...
Windsor Heights Lutheran Church is a community of 1100 baptized members. I work primarily with children, youth, and parents; within the framework of establishing a holistic approach to "doing church". We strive to be multi-generational in our ministry, while acknowledging the times when age-specific ministry is beneficial and life-giving. Our congregation is trying to discern what living out the Great Commission looks like in a 65-year old mainline protestant congregation.
What are the most pressing questions (both theological and practical) you and your community have?
How do we create a community that meets the spiritual needs of a small group of people without becoming a "separate" or "competing" entity within a larger, more established congregation?

New post at Luthermergent

I thought Evan Curry did a nice job addressing the pitfalls that come with defining “emergent”. For those of you who don’t like to jump between two different articles, here’s what Evan had to say.

I remember a story about a famous punk rock star, who was walking down the street as he was being interviewed by a journalist. The journalist asked this individual, “What is punk rock?” The rocker, hearing the question, turned to a nearb… Continue

Reclaiming Paul

I'm headed to my first non-Lutheran continuing education event. Reclaiming Paul is a joint venture between Emergent Village, Nazarene Theological Seminary, and Jacob's Well church. I'm excited to learn from some contemporary Pauline scholars, as well as talk with some people that are outside of my "normal" networks.
