About Me:
I am a pastor in a mainline Lutheran church in suburbia. I love the church, theology, music, video games, the internet, my dog, my baby and my wife. I am very entrenched in the "emergent" conversation, and curious how to let this conversation take hold in traditional mainline communities.

Who am I? (Many ways to answer this -- be as creative as you want, or not.)
A Daddy, husband, and alpha male (to my dog not my wife:) . Disciple, Pastor, parishoner, believer, doubter, saint, sinner. Nihilist. Scholar, moron. Follower, leader, servant, free lord. Happy, silly, frustrated, cynic. Appetite driven, spoiled technology freak. Im a lover not a fighter! Preacher. Learner. Friend. Beer enthusiast. Impietist.
How did I get into "emerging ministry"?
I converted to Chistianity in 1995. I grew up bored with the church and I found myself amazed by the grace of God. I think of all the things Christ converted me to be, an still does daily, was he converted me to be in some great tensions with the nihilistic and consumerist instincts that are at the core of who I am. I am often dismayed at how hard it is for the body of Christ in the West to succesfully and faithfully engage these realities in our culture. SO here I am.
Say a little bit about the community you share life with...
I work in a traditional mainline congregation in a wealthy disconnected suburbs of Minneapolis. What is ironic to me is that most of accusations leveled at the mainline suburban church are just plain not present. My people want to care for each other, long for true faith in Christ and true community. Not always sure what I'm doing here, in the immediate and existential sense. I do my best to follow Christ each day.
What are the most pressing questions (both theological and practical) you and your community have?
Why is Christopher Walken so freaky?
Why does Kevin McHale still have his job?
Is there any way to get beyond the term Post Modern, Emerging, and Emergent and just have a damn conversation about the church?

Art & Piety

My relationship to music has always been intense. It is at the center of my emotional, spiritual and intellectual well being. For this reason, seven years ago I decided that I needed to center my Lenten fasts around music. It would not have served to give up music for Lent as that would have only drowned my spirituality. I decided instead to choose one band and listen only to them. The year break down like this:
2002: Wilco
2003: Bill Mallonee/Vigilantes of Love
2004: Ani DiFranco
2005: Jars of… Continue

Back in January I begn posting my list. My grandma died and I fell out of the habit of blogging. Before I am making my 2008 list I wanted to finish, here are the top three...The complete list along with honorable mentions and biggest disappointments to follow later this week.

3. Okkervil River: The Stage Names
Even if there had only been one album here it listen, the word dense would have been appropriate. Okkervil river’s penchant for brilliants lyrical expression and revealing esitenti… Continue

The Story of the Quest church plant

Quest: a missional journey
Eugene Cho

This was a great presentation. I have often felt called to do a church plant so it was a good experience to listen to his story. I am not sure what all the notes mean, and some of them are a bit choppy. I am just going to publich them, as is, with out comment. I hope they are still of use to you all. -Jason

Eugene: Resident for eleven years. Have three kids, Trinity, Jubilee and Jedi (jedidiah). They all have biblical and scultural names. He pastore… Continue

From Leading Worship to Curating

The Art of installation worship
By: Mark Pierson
“what you see depends largely on what you look at and where you look from”
-Mark Pierson
Or as I would like to quote:
“Luke, I think you’ll find a lot of the truths you cling to depend greatly on your point of view”

Mark’s Aussie accents made it very easy to speak with him. He started out with a picture of a light and crystal artwork. The crystal was shaped in alluring curves reaching up to the heavens. There was a light shining on it casting var… Continue
