I'm a 1998 graduate of the University of Nebraska, a 2003 graduate of Luther Seminary. Served my first call in Barrett, MN, a small town 30 miles from Alexandria, Morris and Fergus Falls. In 2008 I was called to Lutheran Campus Ministry at Iowa State University as their Campus Pastor, where I currently serve. I'm a truly blessed husband and father who loves serving God in this call to serve Iowa State students, faculty and staff.
I've always been interested in finding what works to proclaim the gospel - maintaining traditional stuff that serves the purpose, but putting outdated or nostalgic ministry aside until such time as it becomes useful again. During seminary I wrote a paper about mission that focused on faith that must be authentic and effective. Pondering along these lines led me to investigate emerging ministry as it developed, including reading Brian McClaren's A Generous Orthodoxy. When I started blogging in 2005, I met more and more folks in the emerging movement and have since found myself intrigued by what's happening within the Lutheran church on emerging lines.
Say a little bit about the community you share life with...
Our campus ministry community is approximately 45-60 active student members with some connection to faculty and staff at Iowa State. At present we are focusing on growth at the student level, both in numbers and in the depth of our ministry, including focusing on discipleship, worship and leadership.
What are the most pressing questions (both theological and practical) you and your community have?
What will it mean to be Lutheran in the 21st century? The church already looks remarkably different than what we've heard from our parents and grandparents: how can we be faithful to what God is doing and leave behind the nostalgic longings to which some of our home churches are clinging desperately?
