Who am I? (Many ways to answer this -- be as creative as you want, or not.)
I am one who wants to follow the questions where they lead, but not fall victim to my tendency to think endlessly before acting. The questions that keep coming back to me about ministry hover around effectiveness and change: why doesn't the Church seem to "work"? What if we lived really differently? What are the real essentials to plant communities of Jesus-followers that multiply?
How did I get into "emerging ministry"?
I caught the missional bug from Bill Easum and Tom Bandy, then got infected with emergent by reading Brian McLaren. Years before, Tom Sine broke down my immunity to thinking very different ideas. You know.... the usual suspects.
Say a little bit about the community you share life with...
I am in a nomadic, dispersed phase that I hope to see resolved. My primary faith community is my family: wife Kisten (also a pastor) and two daughters. Most frequently I am at Gethsemane Lutheran in Maplewood, but that's due to my temporary PT work there as an interim pastor. I also connect regularly for support and accountability with a couple of guys who are mission-minded pastors-in-transition (or something like that.)
What are the most pressing questions (both theological and practical) you and your community have?
How can I pare down the Jesus contagion to it's simplest, most easily transmissible form? Do I have the gifts to then actually nurture communities out of that? Along the way, how will I pay the bills?

Greenhouse Training, September 25-27, Saint Paul, MN

I'd like to invite anyone living in or near the Twin Cities to join me for the Greenhouse Training we're hosting at my church in September. It's a Friday evening, Saturday morning and afternoon, and Sunday afternoon September 25-27.

What's a Greenhouse?

In a nutshell, a Greenhouse training does two things:

* Helps participants to reground their thinking about Church in "organic" terms as a simple, living organism that readily grows and reproduces. Much of the time at the training is spent exp… Continue

I was planning on it. Is it going to be in the same facility as Christianity21?

I do remember you and your daughter! I was the one passing out bulletins. I remember having a lot of visitors that night, and I am horrible at mingling. Too engaged in one conversation! I was also at the SPAS Assembly with Jodi maybe our paths crossed there as well.

As far as house churches, I never realized what Luther had to say about it, although I am not surprised that it was not taught at seminary, given the traditions on how new congregations are planted in the ELCA, as well as the concern of laity taking on primary preaching roles.

As for myself; had I heard of a Lutheran house church before coming to HW, I very well may have gone that direction. The thing I enjoy about HW is the intimacy. I am able to remember people, and have deep conversations about faith with people that I have not known very long, and the environment encourages this.

I know we were thinking about the house church idea for a while. In between spaces we began meeting at Pastor Jodi and my house, and realized in short order that none of our houses were large enough to accommodate the number of adults and children, and it was also stressful for the hosts, but I am thinking about how we can transfer a lot of the ideas to what we are doing at HW.

Also, thank you for the link (I am totally okay with shameless self promotion, I do it all the time with HW) I will get to reading!

Unfortunately not at Luther yet! Although hopefully that's in the future. I have been attending Humble Walk Lutheran for a while now, and am getting involved in some of the leadership opportunities.

I am certainly interested, but do not know much about them.

There are a couple reasons why I rarely write on physics matters, albeit I do tweet on them. First, nearly all my client work is under a non disclosure agreement, and thus much is prohibited. Secondly, its a bear to target in general, but more so when the subject area is narrow. If I write in general terms, I loose the technical audience. If I write in tech terms, the audience is typically under a few hundred people if that world wide, most of whom dont participate in the blogosphere. Its a bit of a conundrum. (of course, there is an aspect of taking the first step, and others following), I might have to give that a try. :)

Are house churches supported by the ELCA?

This may sound funny to you, but I want to be in a situation where I as a clergy person can be treated as one of the body of Christ & be ministered to when needed. I get tired of always being in the leadership role.

I am tired of "Church done the old way" and want more freedom of worship--plus giving the laity more opportunity to minister, preach, teach, and chances for the youth to be a part of the adult community where we can grow together in the faith. Now there is so much segregation that outside of confirmation and youth group most of the parishioners don't even get to know the youth or appreciate them for the precious individuals they are.

Thanks, Tim, for your reply. Don't have time to respond at length right now, but I'll try to keep you apprised of what I'm up to. I too have toyed with the idea of a network of missional house churches.
